February 8, 2006

CRYSTAL COAST, N.C. – Newport Pig Cookin’ Contest, the largest whole hog mouthwatering barbeque pig cooking contest in the U.S., allows attendees to discover excitement on the Crystal Coast with home-cooked, delectable B-B-Q with all the fixins and southern celebration, March 31-April 1, 2006. The two day festival celebrating its’ 28th year, anticipates exploration for the curious from finger-lickin’ fare and whirling rides to friendly rivalry and hometown tunes.

Locals and visitors alike gather for the traditional event that began in 1978 with participation from everyone in the town and now boasts its’ own building with warmers, pots, and pans as well as ticket and souvenir booths. More than 80 cooks contend by preparing the pork in elaborate cookers to win the reign of “Best Cooked Pig,” and the winner of $1,000. With hassle-free hospitality, vendors range from farmers in overalls and bibs chowing on barbeque and corn to tuxedo adorned chefs offering pork and succulent sauce on a silver platter. The down-home activities kick-off Friday evening with an opening ceremony of events from cutesy crafts to downtown get down while the night ends with the burners heating up. As the prize-winning pigs are roasted overnight, Saturday initiates judging of the cuisine creations starting with the “presentation of the pork.” As the main event, the presentation begins with judges taste testing each cooked pig and examining all themes ranging from hillbilly to Hawaiian while crowds gather for delicious, specially prepared barbeque for a collaborative close of the contest.

For those looking for accommodations during the customized occasion, the Crystal Coast hosts a coastline shadowed not by chain hotels but by nothing more than what Mother Nature intended. Vacationers find a variety of accommodations to suit every lifestyle and budget with several real estate agencies offering seaside cottages and massive beach mansions as well as hotel accommodations.

Famous for 85-miles of shimmering beaches, crystalline blue water and lush maritime forests, North Carolina’s Crystal Coast along the Southern Outer Banks was designated as having “Clean and Healthy” beaches by the Clean Beaches Council.
