It's No Mystery Why North Carolina's Crystal Coast is a Place Filled with History

North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores a major maritime attraction showcasing the area's aquatic history with 3,000 specimens indigenous to North Carolina and “Living Shipwreck” will feature a life-sized replica of a German U-352 submarine and Blackbeard's infamous ship, The Queen Anne's Revenge with a 60-foot viewing window.
Civil War buffs venture to each town on the Crystal Coast where history lingers from historic Fort Macon, a five-sided fort that has seen service in many conflicts, including the Civil War and World War II to The Old Burying Grounds in Beaufort where a little girl is buried in a keg of rum and a soldier is buried standing up in his full uniform saluting England.
On the South Core banks, history comes alive at the Cape Lookout Lighthouse and Keepers Quarters, built in the mid-1800's to warn passing ships of the dangerous coastal waters. The first lighthouse built in 1812 was proven too short for passing mariners and was renovated in 1859, continuing to warn passing ships of the shoals even today.
Another must-see mystery is the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum offers guests to experience the preservation of the practice of decoy carving, where guests can view live demonstrations from actual decoy carvers in their “decoy-carving workshop.”
Local heritage is showcased at The History Place where timeless and treasured stories, people, places and skills are featured in interesting exhibits and workshops. Delving into the rich cultural history of the Crystal Coast, The History Place also showcases historical treasures from artifacts chronicling the area's indigenous Native American peoples to an on site Civil War library with a detailed genealogical record for the area.
From the primitive federal style of the John C. Mason home dating back to 1825 displaying decorative faux finishes to the Morse House dating to 1771 and one of Beaufort oldest and most elegant private waterfront homes, Beaufort Historic Site takes visitors back in time for a visit to a seaside town that has been home to seafarers, patriots and pirates. Additions at the historic site include “Living History” demonstrations and tours of the town on a 1948 English Double Decker Bus.
Mystery-seekers take part in the Beaufort Ghost walk, an after dark stroll through a historic town full of haunted tales, including chilling stories of murderous pirates, unexplained happenings, ghost ships and haunted houses.
