North Carolina’s Crystal Coast Offers a Peek into the Past and Future with Home and Garden Tours
May 1, 2007
EMERALD ISLE • ATLANTIC BEACH • MOREHEAD CITY • BEAUFORT • CAPE LOOKOUT, N.C. – March 20, 2007 -- The Beaufort Old Homes & Gardens Tour (June 22-23), the Morehead City Homes and Heritage Tour (May 19) and the Emerald Isle Homes Tour and Art Show (April 21) give visitors a glimpse of the historical setting of the quaint seaport villages on the Crystal Coast, North Carolina’s Southern Outer Banks. The picturesque town and inspiration for many Nicholas Sparks’ best selling novels, Beaufort offers tour-goers an eclectic mix of homes and history, including a one of a kind burial ground where local legend says a little girl is buried in a keg of rum, a 1948 English Double Decker Bus tour, the primitive federal style of the John C. Mason home dating back to 1825 and glorious gardens. The Beaufort Homes Tour features houses dating as far back as 200 years and highlights a range of antique venues from historic buildings and remarkable churches to private homes. Tour-goers leisurely stroll along the streets of Beaufort as guides await them in Beaufort’s Old Burying Ground and share stories like the one of a soldier buried standing up in his full uniform saluting England. Music, “Living History” demonstrations and tours of the town on a 1948 English Double Decker Bus all make the Old Homes Tour a special weekend. After touring, the Antique Show & Sale takes place at the Crystal Coast Civic Center, where a wide variety of fine collectables and antiques including Civil War memorabilia and 18th and 19th century American English pieces are offered at affordable prices. The Morehead Homes and Heritage Tour explores the downtown historic district known as Shepard’s Point and the 1905 Morehead City Train Depot. The tour includes 10 homes, the History Place and four Historical Buildings, including the Webb Library and Civic Center. Enjoyable events at the Civic Center include an art show and sale, wine and cheese party, local author book signings and a family fun day in the park. The Mayor of Morehead hosts a closing ceremony for the festivities and to thank all of the town’s guests. The Emerald Isle Homes Tour features the most interesting, modern houses and mainland properties in the Isle. This tour takes a different approach offering the latest in resort living, pools, great views, media rooms, and all the latest gadgets. These houses referred to locally as “sandcastles” offer décor to suite everyone’s taste from ornate to exotic and all with stunning views. Tour also includes the always popular art show featuring locally flavored pieces by local artists at affordable prices.
