Beaufort, NC Recaptures the Pirate Invasion of 1741
June 17, 2010
BEAUFORT N.C. – The Pirate Invasion of Beaufort, in North Carolina’s Crystal Coast takes families through a reenactment of harrowing events from history and plundering pirate adventures, Aug. 13-14, 2010. The town of Beaufort hosts an event highlighting the pirate attack of 1747 as guests, privateers and crews help fend off the yearly invasion of battles and trials. On June 17, 1747 several Spanish privateers began their attack on the Beaufort Harbor by stealing several small ships. The courageous men counterattacked with the help of farmers and locals, ultimately driving out the Spanish. Several Spanish privateers died in battle on these grounds and were buried at Queen Anne’s Cemetery. The yearly Beaufort Pirate Invasion reenactments are based on the events from this attack. The event kicks off on Fri., Aug. 13 at 5:00 p.m. with grog and grub in the presence of pirates. Pirate Invasion Day on Sat., Aug 14 features Capt. Horatio Sinbad aboard Meka II for the pirate encampment and a pirate procession to the waterfront before the town of Beaufort hosts the Invasion reenactments and a party with harrowing pirates. Children of all ages interact with pirates on the grounds of Beaufort Historic Site, with costume contests and storytelling. The Crystal Coast offers visitors a variety of lodging options to suit every lifestyle, from seaside cottages and massive beach mansions to oceanfront hotel accommodations and seaside bed and breakfast suites. Accommodation options include (a sampling only): • Inlet Inn - $145/night • Beaufort Inn - $159/night • Sheraton Atlantic Beach - $199/night • Emerald Isle Realty - $1,500/week Dangling like a delicate strand of pearls off the coast of North Carolina, the favored Atlantic beach destination of generations represents one of the only remaining natural barrier island systems in the world. The Islands are strung together with 85 miles of silken coastline along the southern Outer Banks, 56 miles of which are in the protected Cape Lookout National Seashore. Miles of shimmering water reflects countless tiny suns during the day and shatters the moon into a thousand pieces at night.
