The Crystal Coast Welcomes Sky High Masts And Packed Marinas During Pepsi America’s Sail
February 8, 2006
CRYSTAL COAST, N.C. -- Pepsi America’s Sail, an international sailing event spanning North, Central and South America, is scheduled to make its only stop in the United States on the Crystal Coast, June 30 – July 5, 2006 and will include everything from tall ship tours and pirate reenactments to a children’s theater production and a spectacular Independence Day fireworks presentation. The boat race, also known as a regatta, features 15-20 magnificent “tall ships.” The winner of the previous America’s Sail regatta, Captain Horatio Sinbad, was allowed to choose the location for the 2006 event. He decided on his homeport of Beaufort, North Carolina – a quaint maritime village that boasts a history rich in swashbuckling pirate tales and waters that are known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” for the more than 2,000 shipwrecks offshore. Other stops on the tour include Forteleza, Brazil and Casa de Campo, Dominican Republic. The five-day event kicks off with music and entertainment along the Beaufort waterfront followed by several boat parades showcasing the three classes of ships. Sailing enthusiasts get the opportunity to climb aboard their favorite tall ships and take guided tours from bow to stern. The event concludes with a brilliant Fourth of July fireworks display lighting up the sky over the Crystal Coast. The tall ships invited to participate in the America’s Sail all come from rich and varied pasts. Among them include the United States Coast Guard ship, the Eagle, the only square rigged vessel in U.S. government service, the Bounty, constructed in 1960 by MGM Studios for the film “Mutiny on the Bounty,” the Kruzenshtern, the second largest sailing ship in the world and the Surprise, which appeared in the film “Master and Commander: Far Side of the World.” With a coastline shadowed not by chain hotels but by nothing more than what Mother Nature intended, vacationers to the Crystal Coast find a variety of accommodations to suit every lifestyle and budget. There are several real estate agencies offering seaside cottages and massive beach mansions for rent as well as hotel lodging. Famous for the 85-miles of shimmering beaches, crystalline blue water and lush maritime forests, North Carolina’s Crystal Coast along the Southern Outer Banks was designated as having “Clean and Healthy” beaches by the Clean Beaches Council. The Crystal Coast is recognized among the best shipwreck diving destinations in the world by Scuba Diving magazine.
