"Waterfowl Weekend" Lets Visitors to the Crystal Coast Experience Rich Maritime Heritage
October 9, 2007
Harkers Island, N.C. – The Core Sound community of the Crystal Coast hosts Waterfowl Weekend November 30 – December 2, 2007 with traditional decoy carving and boat building demonstrations, live folk music and plenty of the area’s finest fresh seafood and home cooking. The event is held at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum and Heritage Center giving members of the Harkers Island community a chance to throw open their doors welcoming everyone to their annual down home celebration of the natural beauty and maritime heritage of the area. This year’s celebration will serve as a special preview of the newly restored Willow Pond and hiking trails where visitors can enjoy viewing waterfowl in their habitat around the 3-acre freshwater pond and along the shore overlooking Core Sound. The festival kicks off on Friday evening, Nov. 30 with a Seafood Extravaganza, featuring Core Sound’s finest Atlantic Ocean catch and a delightful dessert by candlelight reception in the museum to follow. Some of the most talented artisans, musicians, and chefs are on hand Saturday and Sunday, during what is considered the highlight of Waterfowl Weekend, sharing some of the community’s most prized pastimes including live boat building demonstrations from the area’s favorite local backyard boat builders and tales of Harkers Island’s rich heritage told by local storytellers. “Carteret Catch,” the initiative to signify which restaurants in Carteret County serve locally caught seafood, provides festival-goers with the opportunity to meet local fishermen and their families as well as chefs from local restaurants. For the serious decoy enthusiast, the Core Sound Decoy Carver’s Guild will host the 20th annual Decoy Festival at the Harkers Island Elementary School, Saturday and Sunday, with a decoy carving competition, decoy auction, children’s decoy painting and “World Famous” loon calling competition. Famous for the 85-miles of shimmering, sandy white beaches, crystalline blue water and lush maritime forests, North Carolina’s Crystal Coast along the Southern Outer Banks was designated as having “Clean and Healthy” beaches by the Clean Beaches Council. The Crystal Coast is consistently recognized as having the best wreck diving in the world by Scuba Diving magazine.
