Offering a variety of sea life, the Crystal Coast – North Carolina’s Southern Outer Banks – allows intense offshore or calm inshore fishing on charters, piers, private boats or toes in the sand, meeting every budget, desire and level of expertise. Due to warm Gulf Stream currents, anglers reel in abundant catches year-round, from rare Blue Marlin and fighting Amberjack to delicious Yellowfin Tuna and enormous Red Drum. As a major industry, local fisherman rely on year-round fishing to provide fresh sea fare to more than 80 privately owned restaurants on he Crystal Coast.

Warm Gulf Stream currents provide the destination with the longest fishing season on the Atlantic coast. A sampling of catches include:
• SPRING – Cobia, Flounder, King Mackeral
• SUMMER – Grouper, Billfish, Game Fish, Flounder
• FALL – Grey Trout, Red Drum, Spot, Flounder
• WINTER – Puppy Drum, Stripers, Speckled Trout, Giant Blue Fin Tuna

World-renowned tournaments bring weeklong excitement to the destination. The Big Rock Blue Marlin Fishing Tournament, held June 12-19, 2010, is one of the largest fishing tournaments in the world. Last year, the non-profit tournament celebrated its 51st anniversary with more than 150 participants and a $1 million purse. Having raised $200,000 for local charities, the Wahoo Challenge, Oct. 13-16, 2010, pits fishermen against notoriously quick and elusive game fish. The Atlantic Beach Saltwater Classic, from September 16-18, 2010, plays on the competitive spirit and long-standing rivalries of local anglers.

For nearly 400 years, fishing has been an integral part of the Crystal Coast heritage and economy. Carteret County provides visitors with the chance to dine on “fresh from the docks” seafood caught the same day in clean, North Carolina coastal waters with the Carteret Catch program. The goal of Carteret Catch is to make fishing a viable lifestyle for the nearly 1,850 local fishermen and preserve a culture that characterizes the central coastal region of North Carolina.

For those wishing to stay overnight, or make it a weeklong fishing excursion, the Crystal Coast has a variety of accommodations to fit every style and budget, from oceanfront mansions and waterfront cottages to intimate bed & breakfasts and full-service hotels. Price start at:
• Bed & Breakfast - $95/night
• Full Service Hotel - $100/night
• Oceanfront cottage - $995/week

Dangling like a delicate strand of pearls off the coast of North Carolina, the favored Atlantic beach destination of generations represents one of the only remaining natural barrier island systems in the World. The Islands are strung together with 85 miles of silken coastline along the southern Outer Banks, 56 miles of which are in the protected Cape Lookout National Seashore. Miles of shimmering water reflects countless tiny suns during the day and shatters the moon into a thousand pieces at night. Lush maritime forests edge the silken coast like emerald jewels studding a royal crown. The barrier islands take a curious southward curve, blessing the Crystal Coast with beaches that course east and west making it possible to admire the dazzlingly bright sun rise to greet the day and then slip into the shimmering translucent blue waters in the evening during a spectacular North Carolina sunset.
